The Iron Strings Quartet was founded in 2010 by a group of string players from Skule™ Orchestra who sought to perform more chamber music in the Skule™ Music community. The quartet hosts regular concerts, plays at weddings and other special occasions, and participates in different events on campus and around the city. Kate is a third year Engineering Science student, majoring in Biomedical Systems Engineering. She started violin lessons at the age of eight, after attending an orchestral performance and being fascinated by the concertmaster. Since then, she has performed with Surrey Youth Orchestra, Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra, Hart House Orchestra and Skule™ Orchestra. Other than cuddling with her violin, her favourite methods of procrastinating on schoolwork include picking up dance moves from YouTube videos and consuming excessive amounts of bubble tea.
Kenny Kimmins started playing the violin at the age of four after seeing his brother learn the instrument. He became Concertmaster of the Seoul Youth Chamber Orchestra at the age of 12. Since then, he served as Concertmaster in various ensembles in Toronto, performed at Massey Hall, and joined the Hart House Orchestra. Kenny just received his BASc in Engineering Science, and is currently pursuing an MASc in Biomedical Engineering. When not too busy researching or rehearsing, he can be found erging or rowing.
Allan Liu is a second year Engineering Science student who is currently slightly confused about his major option. He started violin at the age of five and switched to viola at the age of 16. An NYO alumnus, Allan is an active viola player enjoying his third year with TSYO. When not viola-ing all day and doing assignments last second, he can be found wrecking his brother at squash in the Athletic Centre.
Lika is currently in her third year double majoring in statistics and human biology at the University of Toronto. She started playing the cello at the age of eight and has been a member of Hart House Orchestra since her first semester at the University of Toronto. Since joining Iron Strings, she has mastered the skillful art of pretending to be an engineering student through snooping around the engineering buildings and picking up the language. In her spare time she enjoys lining up for churros and tacos at Kensington Market and sipping on an iced capp from Tim Hortons.
